The Baikonur Cosmodrome is a unique complex, consisting of the most complex technical facilities, the world’s first and largest cosmodrome of international significance. It is located in the territory of Kazakhstan, not far from the village of Turatam.
The total area of the cosmodrome is 6717 square kilometers.
Baikonur began to be built on January 12, 1955, became a cosmodrome in 1957. In the 1970s and 1980s it was the largest cosmodrome of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s, the cosmodrome moved to Kazakhstan. It is rented by Russia until 2050.
From Baikonur, the world’s first artificial earth satellite (October 4, 1957) and the world’s first artificial satellites of the Sun, Moon and Venus were launched. It was from Baikonur that the world’s first manned space flight was carried out (April 12, 1961 – the flight of YA Gagarin on the spacecraft “Vostok”).
From the Baikonur cosmodrome, manned spacecrafts of the Vostok, Voskhod, Soyuz, orbital stations of the Salyut, Mir series, the reusable Energia-Buran system, interplanetary spacecraft, and artificial satellites of the Earth were launched. Today, Baikonur is open to world cooperation in the field of space exploration, to implement the launch of the new generation of manned space programs into orbits of the international orbital complexes as the only one that is the largest in Eurasia cosmodrome.
